Wasp Watch Records 2007

December 2007

December proved to be the busiest December for 5 years - most probably a result of the fact that the website continues to grow and underlying search engine traffic is also growing. After taking the growth of internet search traffic into account we believe that overall December 2007 presented the same level of sting activity as the historically worst year of 2004. Now that 2007 is complete it is interesting to note that overall activity for the entire year is 5% ahead of 2004 - after taking internet growth into account we would estimate that 2004 still remains the worst sting year since our records began in 2002.

November 2007

November continues to show record levels of activity - remarkably similar levels to those seen in March and April of this year. In addition the year as a whole is showing an increase of 25% in sting activity on 2006 - although the record levels of 2004 have still not been matched. October 2007

October 2007 was the busiest October on the website since records began - Uk weather was generally benign for wasps and sting incidents were some 50% higher than in October 2006. Overall up to 31st October, the year 2007 is showing a 25% increased sting incidence over 2006 but has still not achieved the sting levels of the very bad year in 2004.

September 2007

This September proved to be the worst September for sting risks since our records began - a reflection of the very wet July and early August in the UK and the need to make up time collecting nectar in September. Sting encounters were significant in number and for the year to date 2007 matches the record bad year of 2004. Overall however the peaks of 2004 still remain higher than the peaks of 2007.

August 2007

The most active month since records began in 2003 with overall sting activity very high and the WaspWatch Index set at Dangerously High. The month was comparatively dry and warm and many stinging insects throughout the UK seem to have made up for the difficult month of July by increased flying and food collection.

July 2007

A month of severe rains, particuarly in central and western England has also seen a dramatic decline in insect sting activity - some 20% lower than 2006. Rain not only destroys nests and leads to the death of both wasps and bees due to damp and cold, but also means that flying conditions and both pollen and nectar collection are very poor.
